Edmonton Business Coach | Is a Degree Necessary to Start a Business?

Hi, welcome to the Edmonton business coach, Inspired Method Marketing channel here on YouTube so glad that to joined us. My name is Karen, and today we’re going to be talking about is a degree necessary to start a business? Hm, good question. Might be a little heated debate. Michael Gerber, the author of the e-myth says, the fatal assumption is if you understand the technical work of a business, you understand the business that does that technical work. That’s a total myth. It’s not true. It’s absolutely so 78.5% of all employer businesses in Canada in 2015 we’re service oriented businesses and that’s coming from stats Canada.

Yeah, so what’s really interesting is a lot of people think that a degree is the preferred pathway to becoming a successful business owner. Some, however, are on the other side of the spectrum and are great technicians, but they’re absolutely terrible business owners. So where, how do we, as Edmonton business coach, make sense of this all? We’re going to find out,

well, let’s go through some, some good questions will open up our minds. Is it necessary to have a business degree to start a business?

Well, there’s two schools of thought. See for me for a long time, what kept me from starting a business, what kept me from getting started was I thought, well, why don’t have a degree so I can’t start a business because I just, there’s got to be something that they teach you that I just don’t know yet in order to get started. And I always had that, that limiting belief that because I didn’t have a degree, I couldn’t, you know, start a business. And I don’t believe that it’s true at all because there’s a lot of people who don’t have business degrees, who started very successful businesses. Think about people like, um, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, they’re outliers. They’re very unique individuals, but they have no degree. And there’s, you know, countless other people who’ve started multimillion dollar multinational companies without a degree. My experience as an Edmonton business coach has shown it’s not necessary, but I think it can help.

Yeah. But we’ll it guarantee your success if you do have one, absolutely not. I think we all know the answer to that.

Absolutely not. There’s no, there’s no guarantees in life and there’s no guarantees. Even if you have an education that you’re going to be a successful business owner, you might be a really smart person and you might know a lot about business or a lot of, of the technical aspects, but actually physically running a business takes a little something extra that they just don’t teach you in school. Um, and that’s, that’s the point of our discussion today and what we help entrepreneurs with at Edmonton business coach.

Yeah. Are business schools able to stay current with the trends and marketing tactics? No. Things move

really, really quickly. And Do, you know, they, they just can’t, they can’t keep up with the pace of change out there because it’s, it’s like trying to steer a ship with a, a little rowboat path, right. Things having to, to move really quickly and you’re trying to move this big, um, thing and people are, things are decided on committee and things are decided in big rooms with a lot of smart people. Um, so it’s really not possible to stay current with all the latest trends and things that are happening in the marketplace. So, um, it’s, yeah, it’s difficult.

Yeah. I was thinking of some of my courses as you were reading that cause it just, just about finished and marketing diploma and you’re right, some of the courses that are dealing with social media that there was no book with that course. It’s all hands on right inside social media because there’s no way to stay current. You would not want to be re editing and updating the editions of those books. Is that what make everyone angry? Yeah. So, Edmonton business coach, does being a good technician mean I will be a successful business owner?

Nope. Not at all. There’s a lot of people who go to technical school to become a plumber, a mechanic or otherwise and you know, they think, oh I don’t want to work for some guy who was making your millions of dollars. You know how long I should be the guy on the other side making that money. Not that cause I’m boom, all the work and I know how to do this and really, really good. Yeah, that’s maybe true. You may be a really excellent electrician, plumber, mechanic, what have you, carpenter. But it doesn’t give you the skills that are necessary to run a successful small business. It’s just the fact that you might be, you know, people might be super happy with your work and you might be able to get into it and really getting to the nuts and bolts in it and create something amazing. But when it comes to being a business owner, the last thing that you should be doing, he’s working on the tools will you need to be doing is building a business. So that means sales, marketing, HR, uh, tax planning, you need to do all those other things. You know, making sure that you’ve got the right materials, the right place, the right time, scheduling, checklists, all of these other things that are very important to know and learn and incorporate. The last thing you need to be doing is being the technician. Talking to an Edmonton business coach can really help.

Yeah, that’s so true. So how important is the sales training to running a business?

It’s, it’s huge. Sales is the lifeblood of any business. Without sales, nothing happens. Unless there’s an exchange of money between yourself and your client, then you don’t have a business. You have a hobby that’s, oh my gosh, that’s the biggest difference is until you have a client to take care of and have money in exchange, then you’re not accountable to anybody. And you can just, you know, continue floating around and chasing shiny objects everywhere. But once you, once you start down that pathway and you’ve got clients to take care of and then all of a sudden things get serious.

Yeah. You can just take those rose colored glasses right off them right now because it’s so true. That’s what I was thinking as you said that, Edmonton business coach. How are, do customers care how good your grades were in college? Oh, I had asked all the time, Huh? No, no, no. My friend doctor that’s dead on security. They wouldn’t be that if they didn’t get good.

Yeah. In the case of a doctor, an engineer, you know, those types of, uh, disciplines. Yes. Yeah. I see. You have to go get a degree. You have to get educated and you have to get certified and make sure that you meet certain standards in order to practice medicine or build bridges. Yeah, that’s very important. Um, but for things like, you know, the things we talked about, people that we help, not so much.

Yeah. Like, do customers really care how well you did in college on whatever your profession is? They care about how much you care about them and they care how well, how good of a job you do and what your service is like. Yeah, sure. Thanks. So Edmonton business coach, do they teach you how to be a good leader in college? No. Nope. There’s always leaders that come up. I know that just being in lots of courses lately and I always tended to be that person because it’s who takes it seriously, right? You just, you just step it up and I don’t know, maybe you want to add something.

Yeah, no, 100%. There’s people who automatically gravitate towards a leadership role because they, they just follow that pathway. But, um, when it comes to learning how to be a leader, the old, there’s only one real good way to learn how to be a leader. And so I started meeting people and taking, taking the reigns of something in starting to lead a, you’ll find out real quick how, how challenging it is and how fun it is. And uh, you know, how much you’re challenged on a daily basis and how much you need to grow as a person to become.

Oh really good, clear. You don’t necessarily start out as a leader. When I was in university 25 years ago, I wasn’t not a leader at all. I was a follower. But you know, 25 years later I go to school again and I’m a totally different person. I know lots of life events happen, but it can change, it can grow, you can just become more mature and ready for it. So just want to put that in there because it doesn’t always just happen naturally. No. Just over the course of your life you can change. What’s a great way to learn how to make schedules, checklists, templates for your Edmonton business coach?

Well, there’s a couple of different paths you can take. You can hire somebody to help you with that. So getting a good CFO on board or someone who is really great at and get them as part of your company. The other one is hiring a great business. Cultures like us, you can help us or help you get started with all of those things and creating those checklists and templates and systems and put them in place for your business. Those are a couple of big places. Another one is if you want to self educate, there’s a million different ways to get educated out there and you can follow people on YouTube, you can read books. Um, and then the other ways to just get started, you start making a list and then you see where that this needs to change. And you ask other entrepreneurs that you network with and say, Hey, what are you doing for, you know, your systems and how did you develop this? And you know, really getting to know other people in your community like an Edmonton business coach, will be willing to help you and mentor you down the road.

Yeah, it actually, it’s kind of like the concept of outsourcing. If you don’t have the talent, you can always outsource that until you can learn and grow. And you don’t always have to pay for that. Lots of people are like willing to give a lot of information for free, like you said on YouTube and you know, different Facebook groups, all sorts of places. You can get a lot of education and templates and files and stuff. So. So where can you find a good coach or mentor besides us? Besides the Edmonton business coach?

Well, just a lot of things that we kind of said it already, you know, in, in networking groups. So whether it’s a local business group or businessmen’s, lunch group, something like that has a great place. You can look at different forums on Facebook, chamber of Commerce, different places where you can kind of, people who would be more than willing to help you out. And it might cost you, you know, buying the lunch or two or maybe a dinner and then just taking them out and asking questions of a established business. People, um, people are more than willing to help others out. When you are, you know, you humble yourself and you say, hey, you know, I have questions about this. Would you be willing to help me? And you know, that is a good place to just start.

And another way to do that, even without asking for the help, is show up to help where you can in those places, like a Facebook group, maybe you know the answer to something. Just start sharing what you know. And you know what? You’ll start stepping up as a leader, as you will start getting attention and people will want to hang around you. They’ll want to share what they know with you. So that’s another way that I’ve done it. I’ve gotten some attention that way. So yeah.
